Although TOPS focuses on the maths and sciences, it would not be complete without the enriching English program. Students study classics such as Gilgamesh, The Odyssey, Antigone, and Oedipus Rex. Students study a Shakespearian play each year. Students are also exposed to more contemporary novels, including The Great Gatsby, The Cellist of Sarajevo, and In the Skin of a Lion.
Each of the four English courses is carefully crafted to help students build upon their creative and critical writing skills. Most of the courses are focused around one particular theme, using literature that spans from the earliest manuscripts of written text, to modern day novels written in the twenty-first century. The unifying elements of literature serve to strengthen the students’ English skills.
