Escapade in New York

Rounding off four years together, the Grade 12 TOPS students enjoyed a week off in New York City. The cohort explored NYC and enjoyed tours of the Lincoln Center, the 9/11 Memorial Museum, the Tenement Museum, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the Radio City Music Hall, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Hot Topics in Biology

This Friday, the Grade 12 Biology students conducted fifty-minute seminars on epigenetics and immortalized cell lines. The first group discussed the effect of chemical compounds bonded to DNA that affect its expression. UTIAS Trip

On November 24, AP Physics C  and Astronomy students visited UTIAS, the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies. The students learned about the concepts behind aerodynamics, plane design, mathematical simulation techniques, solar wings, the university’s Soyuz-launched satellites, and biomimicry in a series of lectures from the university’s graduate-level researchers (some former TOPS students!). Visualizing Vector Algebra

This week, Mr. McMaster has been enthusiastically teaching vector algebra to the Grade 12’s using meter sticks, paper, and rulers in his interactive demonstrations of planar and linear intersections. Abstract mathematical concepts have never been so hands-on!
